Keva Bain elected president of the World Health Assembly

Keva Bain, The Bahamas’ representative to the United Nations has been elected president of the 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA).

The WHA is the decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The two-day WHA, which is hosted anually in Geneva, Switzerland, is being held virtually today as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As he addressed the assembly this morning, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said the pandemic, which came on the heels of Hurricane Dorian, has “destroyed” the Bahamian economy.

He pleaded with United Nations member states to reconsider the metrics for determining which countries are eligible to receive financial aid.
